He was the son of a prosperous lawyer and had a good education in English and Bengali. However, he left his formal education early and moved to Calcutta to pursue his literary career.

Michael Madhusudan Dutta is known for his contribution to Bengali literature, particularly for his epic poem "Meghnadbadh Kavya" (The Slaying of Meghnad), which is based on the Ramayana. He was the first Bengali poet to write in blank verse, and he introduced Western literary traditions to Bengali literature.
